A flat tire is every traveler’s nightmare, especially when you’re out in the middle of nowhere. It is more disturbing when you don’t have a spare or leave the tools for changing a tire back somewhere. These odd chances beg the question: how far can you drive on a flat tire? The limit you can safely drive on a flat tire is 50 miles.
How long you can drive with a nail in the tire depends primarily on the shape and size of the hole. If the nail itself seals the hole, you can drive for a day or two before the tire deflates. If the nail, punctures the tire at an odd angle, the flexing of the tire will cause the air to escape more quickly, giving at most an hour.
But 1000km is still way too much. Couple of hundred km would probably be ok. I was told by a tire shop years ago that what ever max speed was was the also the max distance, so max speed of 80km/hr = max distance of 80km. I wouldn’t drive more then that with your vehicle being AWD as you can damage the differentials.
Run-flat tires are standard or optional on 16.1% of new vehicles, according to Edmunds data. While the number of vehicles available with run-flat tires has doubled in the last decade, they seem to
If it’s at all possible, do not drive more than 70 or so miles on your donut. Its smaller size will cause excess wear on wheel bearings, brakes, and transmission gears. There’s also a much higher chance of a blowout or tire damage because of the spare’s lightweight design.
If you can see any of the year, consider having your tires inspected, as they are likely below 4/32 of an inch and will soon need to be replaced. If you can see the year completely, the tread is likely below 2/32 of an inch. These tires are considered legally bald and must be replaced.
When you have a flat, put on the donut just long enough to get home, put the 5th full-size on, put the donut back, fix/replace the flat tire, put it in the garage as the new 5th tire. I've always been told 50/50. 50mph and no more than 50 miles. I've taken a "doughnut" to 80+mph and over 100 miles before.
Wires showing on tires signal severe wear and are unsafe, especially at high speeds. Drive only to the nearest tire shop (within about 87 to 94 miles) for immediate replacement. Driving on tires with cords showing is unsafe, risking blowouts and loss of control, necessitating prompt replacement for safety. Many drivers allow tires to get so
WHY! new tires are like 75-150 dollars. if a donut blew while you were on the highway, you could die (its a possibility). look ocean, drive just as far as you need to on a donut. get a new tire and get on with your life. (donuts are good for burnouts tho. especially in the rain)
